Featured Artist March 1 - 31, 2010
Making Time by Making Do

Local clock maker Allan Young, the creator of Stuff Made from Stuff, will be C’ville Arts Cooperative Gallery’s featured artist during the month of March.  The artist will be at the gallery on March 5 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. during the Historic Downtown Mall’s First Friday event.

Young created his first clock when his computer’s hard drive failed.  Fortunately, he fought – and won – the urge to heave it in the nearest trash heap.  Since then, by digging through dumpsters and poking around yard sales, he has liberated dozens of mechanical marvels that have lost their charm, outlived their effectiveness or didn’t survive past their warranty, and turned them into distinctive clocks for walls and desks.

In Young’s hands, something remarkable is produced through recycling.  A discarded bike chain ring, a Mac G4 side cover or a blast-from-the-past LP vinyl record makes What time is it? a whole new experience.  Your next clock may be your grandmother’s ancient sewing machine, but it definitely won’t be your granddad’s old timepiece.  Check out some of Young’s handiwork at

“Allan’s clocks illustrate that, with ingenuity, today’s castoffs can be converted into tomorrow’s treasures,” said Amy Melville, administrator of C’ville Arts Cooperative Gallery.  “It’s always intriguing to see what his latest work is created from.”

The exhibit continues through March 31.
